Alan was a National Award winning builder and custom home designer in Australia before turning to alpaca farming.
A natural affinity for farming was established in Alan from a young age through the Jersey dairy operated by his extended family.

Alan  sat on the Australian Alpaca Association's National Committee for three years. He chaired both the National Show and Sale committee and National Seminar. He also  sat on the National marketing, show, and import screening committees. He is an ex-Western Region committee member.

Alan  also conducted marketing and sales seminars in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, Canberra, Tasmania and Victoria.
In 2001 Alan moved to the US to help his good friend Mike Safley run a marketing and progeny improvement program called the Studmaster Program at Northwest Alpacas in Hillsboro Oregon. This allowed their clients throughout the Ideal Alpaca Community to communally track progeny improvement along sire lines. It incorporated building the first EPDs for alpacas.

In 2004 Al and Jude purchased their Muddy Valley Rd property in Oregon which now runs over 200 alpacas. Alan helps Jude run Pucara International in the US plus their Australian herd, Pucara Alpaca Stud, in operation since 1991.

Alan is past President of the CABA AOBA affiliate, and has spoken at many seminars and conferences throughout the US, UK and Canada on a wide range of alpaca related topics.

He is a passionate surfer that doesn't fill the passion as much as he would like!
He studied Vocational Writing at University majoring in Creative Writing and US Politics! He also began writing poetry.

To finance his studies Alan worked with a builder and as soon as he graduated he started his own Design and Build company that won National awards.

He represented his State in basketball, played in the National Basketball League when only 15 years old, ran sprint and did decathlon in athletics.

He is an animal lover!
